What is a Runflat Tyre?
A run-flat tyre is a type of tyre designed to keep functioning for a limited distance even after it has been punctured or loses air pressure. This allows drivers to continue driving without the immediate need to change the tyre. Run-flat tyres typically allow for about 80 to 100 kilometers (50 to 62 miles) of driving at reduced speeds, usually around 80 km/h (50 mph), giving enough time to reach a repair shop or a safe location.
There are two main types of run-flat tyres:
- Self-Supporting Tyres: These have reinforced sidewalls that can support the vehicle's weight even without air pressure.
- Support Ring Systems: These use a ring of hard rubber or another material inside the tyre that helps maintain the shape and functionality after a puncture.
The benefit of run-flat tyres is that they eliminate the need for carrying a spare tyre, but they often have a firmer ride and are usually more expensive to replace.
Can I fit a Runflat Tyre to my vehicle?
It is highly recommended to only fit run flat tyres to rims that were designed to be used with these particular tyres. e. Run-flat tyres rely on a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) because drivers may not notice a puncture as the tyre won’t visibly deflate. Cars with run-flat tyres usually have a TPMS installed.
It is also advised to avoid fitting regular tyres to rims that are intended to be fitted with run flat tyres.
